[Case Study #1]: An Awesome SEO power Page to Drool Over

For those of you who are familiar with Brian Dean’s SEO That Works Course and the methodology endorsed and applied by Brian over at Backlinko will understand the amazing results of a Power Page.

Those unfamiliar with Brian’s method can read an excellent introduction to THE Backlinking Strategy That Works – 2014 and Beyond Edition.

At a fundamental level, SEO today needs to base itself on a solid foundation. It is not sufficient to create amazing or remarkable content that ends up competing with other amazing and impressive content. It needs grounding with a cocktail of activities that makes it irresistible to Google.

Initially, you need to base your content on something that has already done well before. The premise here is that if others share, like and importantly link back to a piece of content, then it must be ‘worthy’.

Next, you should actively work on promoting the piece of content and attempting to gather backlinks to it by targeting those who have already linked to similar content. The idea is that if they were willing to link to similar content before, then they will link to yours.

Now, I appreciate this is an over-simplification, and the SEO That Works course delves into this more strategically. However, this is the basis of how it works.

On the basis of these premises, I created the Power Page 10 Astonishing Technologies That Power Google’s Self-driving Cars. It was created for a website that sells tyres, and consequently, the industry that the article is targeted to is ‘Automobile’.

However, I want to explore a Power Page that didn’t actually target its industry niche, but achieved exceptional results, assisting the main website towards ranking in Google for the keyword ‘Penny Stocks’. This meant that it was competing against some giants, as well as 11,700,000 competing pages.

Competing pages include CNN.com, SEC.gov and Wikipedia.com, to name but a few.

The Power Page, I must say, is one of the best I have seen – The Internet in Real-Time (unfortunately the page does not exist anymore.  However the image below is a reproduction and you can find an alternative here of The Internet in Real-Time)

The appeal for this page is three different things, namely:

a) Visuals

b) Technology used to capture the data (it all changes in real-time)

c) Fascinating content

Let’s look at the link data behind it.

MajesticSEO:

Pretty impressive – 1,353 referral domains generating 79,350 backlinks.

There is an argument that there should be a balance between referring domains and backlinks. I think people just get hung up on the logic, and if you’re building links naturally, there will always be this imbalance.

I wanted to compare the results with the main URL, pennystocks.la. The difference is 406 domains, and apparently the bulk of the backlinks to the site are achieved by the power page.

Ahref:

Similar result to MajesticSEO.

So, what is the weight of some of the sites that are linking back to the Power Page? Trust Flow for the source pages that links reside on are very impressive.

Downloading the Trust Flow data provides the following results (the top backlink per domain totalling 1,288):

  • 0 = 751
  • 1 – 10 = 326
  • 11 – 15 = 108
  • 15 – 20 = 49
  • 21 – 25 = 45
  • 26 – 30 = 19
  • 31 – 35 = 6
  • 36 – 37 = 2

Although the bulk of the TrustFlow is from weak pages, it is impressive to see over 200 with a Trust Flow of 15+.

It is both impressive and efficient that the links are coming from High Domain/Page Authority pages, including homepages.

Snellingwebdev.com, a web development company, has the page embedded into its homepage with a Page Authority of 40 and a Domain Authority of 28. I did not delve any further into the PA/DA of the backlinks, but I suspect they are of a similar strength.

Finally, we need to understand the industries/categories for links.

MajesticSEO shows that most of the industries/categories are not related to business/investment, which is a category tracked by MajesticSEO. In fact, there is not a lot in the Business category either.

Opening up and looking at backlinks shows no relation to Investment or Penny Stocks whatsoever.

For me, this concludes that if you are struggling to build content directly in your niche, all is not lost. You can still create something awesome that is worthy of linking back to, therefore smashing SEO.
